Holding On To The Dream

Holding On To The Dream

“Mumbler” Willie Wonka shouts at the little boy telling him his idea won’t work, “What is it with you? I just can’t hear you?”

Everyone has their critics, perhaps a partner, friend, parents, or work colleagues. You have a goal, an idea, or an ambition and they just try to pull you down and tell you it won’t work.

In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Willie Wonka had Mike TeaVee as his critic, constantly doubting and disbelieving in all of Wonka’s inventions and ideas. Willie’s method of dealing with this doubt was to not hear the criticism.

Why do they do this?

Partly it is because they are jealous of your ambition and desire to succeed. It may also be because in the past they tried to succeed and failed and they no longer believe it is possible.

Maybe they are trying to protect you from getting hurt. I mean, they wouldn’t want you working hard to achieve a goal and then for you to fail and get upset or hurt, would they?

Often times these people are doing the best they can with the resources they have available to them. Unfortunately, they may not have the right resources to help you achieve your goals and dreams.

This is why I tell people to be very careful who they share their goals with. There are times when it is good to tell people your goals. For example, if you know they are going to support you and encourage you to achieve your goals, then it is a good idea.

If you are going to have someone hold you accountable to your goal, then you must tell them. They will encourage you and ensure you achieve it.

However, if you are like most of the rest of us, there are only a few select people you can share your goals with. For most of the rest, you just have to keep quiet and not tell them what you are working towards; just let them see the results.

If you are not assured about achieving your goals then you really need to keep them to yourself. If you share your goals with other people then their criticism or disbelief can seriously impede your progress towards your target, or in the worst case, stop you completely.

Every successful person on the planet faces constant criticism and doubt. The difference between them and the millions who have never dared dream of their goals is that the successful people brush off the doubt and criticism and believe in themselves.

Admittedly, there are times when perhaps you ought to listen. If you are standing on top of a tall building thinking you can fly … that’s a good time to listen to the people who think you can’t. However, who’s to say that if you believe you could fly you could, but I wouldn’t test it and wouldn’t recommend you do either, just in case.

However, in general, you can take a leaf out of Willie Wonka’s book and ignore the critics around you and believe you can achieve … because your only limits are those you choose to accept or allow others to put upon you.

Why You Need A Mentor

Posted in Uncategorized at 1:27 pm by jayzn

Years ago, I decided I wanted to play the guitar. Keen and eager, I rushed out and bought a guitar, amplifier, effects pedals and a few books. I got it all home, plugged it all in and then made a noise that sounded like a herd of cats all caterwauling out of tune.

After some days and weeks of struggling and irritating my family I decided that I needed to learn properly. The best way to learn properly is to get someone who is already an expert to teach you.

So I went out, found someone who was an expert guitarist in the style I wanted to learn and studied with them. I also watched my favourite guitarists playing; watching exactly how they played and moved their hands. I, of course, copied them (though I now realise it’s called modelling!).

With an expert teaching me, I soon became much better at the guitar and was no longer banished from the house when I wanted to play.

I could probably have taught myself guitar from books and from fiddling with the guitar, but it would have taken me a lot longer than it otherwise did. Through using a mentor, I sped up the learning process and avoided a lot of the pitfalls, bad habits and mistakes many self taught guitarists pick up along the way.

Later on in life, I worked as a consultant for a large computer corporation. Again, I was learning the ropes and was given a mentor; an expert who already knew the system and the company. My mentor advised and guided me through my career as a consultant. He saved me a lot of trouble and made me aware of all the loopholes in the companies processes and procedures, which helped me get more pay rises and a better company car!

Whatever area of your life you want to develop in, it is important that you have a mentor. Whether this is in your career, your personal life, your business or your hobbies. A mentor can speed up the learning process and help you to become the expert and success you want to be.

So how do you find a mentor?

Well, you may know someone who is already an expert and could approach them and ask them. You could join forums on the Internet and find experts there (though check their credentials first). Search for websites of people in the area you want to learn from. You may find they have books to help you or even provide a one to one coaching service. You can also read biographies and auto-biographies of people you want to learn from and model them.

Sometimes you may have to pay a mentor, whether with money or through providing them some service or help. Other times people will be happy to mentor you for free just to help you out. When you become an expert you too may want to give something back and mentor other people.

If you are looking for a business mentor, then often local chambers of commerce provide mentors free of charge. Professional bodies will often be able to put you in touch with a mentor too.

A mentor will save you a lot of time and effort in the long run, and it is well worth your time and effort to find one to shorten your learning curve. Whatever area of your life you are working on, business, personal or pleasure, find yourself a mentor to help propel you forwards to the level of success you desire.

Baby Steps

Posted in Goal Setting at 6:33 pm by jayzn

I caught a movie last night in one of the rare evenings I switch the TV on … it was called “What About Bob?” with Bill Murry in it. It was a very good and funny film, though one thing struck a chord with me.

In it, the psychologist has written a book called Baby Steps, which is about taking on problems / goals a single step at a time.

I was thinking about this and it is incredibly good advice, something I already practise, but it brought the lesson home to me.

Since then I’ve taken my goal of being fit and broken it down into smaller steps. Instead of it being “get fit” I know have specific daily goals. Instead of trying to do an hours worth of exercise a day and doing everything, I’ve broken it down into smaller chunks. I am now doing 15-20 minutes a day focused on a specific area.

I had noticed I was skipping days because I didn’t have the hour, but since I changed my approach I have found it easier to fit in and get myself used to the routine!

Now … back to some more planning!

Setting My Goals

Posted in Goal Setting at 11:26 pm by jayzn

I’ve spent the last day writing down my goals and what I want to achieve this year. Like most people, I’ve got a large list.

Realistically speaking, I’m not going to achieve all these goals … well … maybe if I cloned myself, but inventing cloning isn’t on my list … yet …

So what I’ve done is taken a dozen reasonably big goals and some smaller ones and decided I am going to work on those for this year. Some of my longer term goals require achievement now, so those too have been added to the list.

Remember, people will dramatically over-estimate what they can achieve in a year, and drastically under-estimate what they can achieve in ten years!

I’ve scheduled these goals throughout the year, leaving some slack time so I can be flexible and do other things. For certain goals, such as getting fitter, I’ve written out daily, weekly and monthly goals. These are now carefully taped to my wall where I can’t avoid them every day. This will remind me to achieve the goals.

So now, after the planning, it’s on to action… time to start doing what I’ve planned and achieving those goals!
